Is CrossFit for You?
First question that you have to ask yourself is if CrossFit is right for you. The main requirement is motivation. CrossFit can either be terrific or terrible depending on your mindset. You have to choose the right box as well. Doing CrossFit means joining a community where the competency coaches and mentors will determine whether you will succeed or fail. Setting the goal is also vital. It is going to dictate your routine, point out if you’re lacking or not and lets you assess if you can actually do it or not. And finally, you need to be able to have fun while exercising. CrossFit is a gruelling workout and only the endorphin rush will save you from your muscles crying in pain.
People often turn away from CrossFit because they fear feeling embarrassed about it. This is normal and as one of the most gaudy workouts out there, CrossFit does nothing to alleviate this concern. But, deciding to exercise is a decision you have to make for yourself and not for the onlookers.
If you are new to CrossFit or new to working out, it is a very good idea to have one on one sessions with a trainer. Some exercises can be dangerous and injury is a real concern.
What is CrossFit?
“A sport of fitness”, this is what CrossFit is being advertised as. Essentially CrossFit is a training philosophy that directs all kinds of people to enhance their physical and mental attributes in a most challenging way. The key is surrounding yourself with accepting people that will support you through a brand of encouragement that only CrossFit can provide. When going through a usual CrossFit workout, one has to usually go through varying kinds of high-intensity routines.
It is worth noting that the top athletes and service men in the world do CrossFit as their main work out. A number of academies hold CrossFit sessions for police officers, basketball players, football players, firemen, military, and many others.
Another aspect that sets CrossFit apart from other forms of workout is the broad scope of workouts that it caters to. Generally, CrossFit practitioners will often tell you to not specialize. This means that you should not, for instance, focus solely on conditioning but raise your strength level as well. This is driven by the belief that in real life, all aspects of fitness will come into play. And being wholly fit could be mean survival. CrossFit divides the physical skills that one should equally be paying attention to. These are conditioning, precision, strength, flexibility, power, pace, dexterity, balance, agility, and stamina.
There are several ways that set CrossFit boxes apart from other gyms. For one, you will not find weight machines or some of the more usual gym tools. Another is that CrossFit has an unchanged routine for all partitioners. You could be an obese person suffering from a heart condition or the star linebacker. The routines will not change, only the scale of it. Often times, everybody does the routines together. This rolls with the community that CrossFit aims to create within its members.
For example, the team is instructed to do a routine which involves doing pushups, you will do as much as you can and that goes for everybody. The police officer might be able to do a hundred. But that does not mean you have to do that much. The key is pushing yourself to the to do as much as you can. If you cannot do a push up at all, you do a knee push up. And if you cannot do that, then a wall push up. It is crucial to know your limit and start from there.
Take a Step Back
CrossFit can be dangerous. As with any exercise, the perils of the workout can lead to temporary and permanent injuries, and in some cases, even death. That is why it is of prime importance to have a mentor who will guide you through the entire process if you are new to it.
CrossFit is littered with seemingly impossible challenges. The purpose of these is to push yourself to do better than the last time but this can sometimes get lost in translation. Proper form is first and foremost what any practitioner should look out for. High intensity workouts done in the wrong form, extreme speeds without supervision from anyone could be very dangerous.
A group of people that CrossFit often lures are those of the extreme variety. These are headstrong individuals with an almost impossible drive to better themselves. And since CrossFit workouts are run like sports where you are made to compete with each other, these types of people end up forcing themselves to the point of bodily harm. If you are one of these people, you have to let somebody watch you to ensure that you are not going to overdo it.
